A day of mixed fortunes in Leicestershire

Icon for AoR RecordsI have learned of a couple of Personal Best scores being set at AoR this morning, but I was up in Leicestershire with Lauren and Katie for the EMAS shoot off and I’ll post more about the AoR personal bests when I get more news.

However, this morning saw an early start for Lauren and I this morning and we headed up the A6 to Great Glen (Bowmen of Glen’s ground) to join Katie and Heather and other members of the EMAS training squad for a Metric shoot off.  The highest scoring archers would be picked for a forthcoming EMAS tournament with North Counties Archery Squad.

Both girls had spent all of the Saturday session working hard on getting their sight marks for 60, 50, 40 and 30 metres and by the end of the session both were setting some good scoring ends and looking forward to the Sunday shoot.

The weather was colder than Saturday with a frost on the ground.  It remained chilly throughout the day, although the sun tried to come through at times warming everyone as the scores were called between ends.

Lauren opened with a strong first set of practice arrows, as did Katie.  However, Lauren began the day with an aching shoulder (probably from the extra poundage to try to reach 60 metres comfortably) and this quickly proved to become a problem.  Both girls completed another two ends of sighters and settled into the scoring ends.

Lauren had a very difficult first couple of ends with her shoulder becoming more of a problem, pain killers taken she continued to complete the 60 and 50 metre distances, but reluctantly pulling out mid way through the 40 metre distance.  However, despite the shoulder issue she was pushing Katie and only fell a few points behind her for the 50 meter distance.

Katie pushed on and with the confidence of a solid 60 meters (a new distance for her this year) followed by another solid 50 meter distance she settled into her stride.  Targets changed for the closer distances and she continued with a strong finish to post a nice 1038 and a new (to be confirmed) county record for the Junior Ladies U18 Metric II.

I’d like to congratulate Katie on another county record and a solid first outdoor shoot at this new distance for her.  Also to Lauren, who battled through two distances before making the right decision and making sure that she will be fit to shoot at the 1st Caswell in a few weeks time.

I am looking forward to a good battle between the two girls again this season.
