Beginners Courses
Archers of Raunds runs regular Beginners Courses at the club Manor School Sports College venue in Raunds, East Northants (Northamptonshire). These courses are run over four consecutive Fridays during the indoor season or three weekends either on a Saturday or Sunday in our outdoor season and provide archers with between 8 and 12 hours of tuition using beginners recurve bows.
The sole purpose of the course is to teach the student archer the basics of safe shooting as defined by Archery GB. As a student archer, you will learn about the parts of a recurve bow, how to safely assemble the bow and then take it down again, how to undertake a full warm up and then how to safely nock, aim and loose the arrow. As the course progresses, you will also learn about etiquette on the shooting line and how to score a shooting end. On the final week, you will then be introduced to a selection of different types of bows (flatbows, horsebows etc) and the techniques used in shooting them.
Students will also be working towards the World Archery Federation (FITA) Beginner Awards. The Feather and Arrow awards are designed to gently test your knowledge and skill of archery and are a great way to improve with your shooting. The coaches will guide you through the whole scheme, and if you pass a simple assessment at the end you will be awarded a feather/arrow badge which most archers attach to their quiver. The purpose is to reward and motivate beginner archers and mark their progression in competency.
Each end of shooting will be supervised by your course tutor, one on one. Along with the safety elements, you will learn good shooting form and you will begin to hone your shooting technique ready for when you graduate to full member status and begin shooting as a full club member.
The course fees are £75 and this is a pre-paid course. Booking is essential as places are limited.
