AOR Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q Why should I include a FAQ page on a archery Web site?
A: You might know everything thing there is to know about archery, The rest of us have to learn somewhere
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q Am I too young/old for Archery?

A: Almost certainly not, if you can access the web - and read this text - you'll do fine. as a rule of thumb kids need to be sensible so they can understand the dangers involved, In Archery as a sport, as you get older you may find the bows harder to draw to get the longer distances, indoors is your friend, a low poundage bow, can easily hit 20 metres and you don't knacker yourself pulling the arrows back out of the boss. Personally I consider Archery on par - pun intended - with golf. Although in competition you try to win on the day the overall aim is to reduce your handicap and the only way to do that is to practice and fine tune your technique.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: I'm partially sighted/Deaf/in a wheelchair/abnormally tall with short arms can I still take part?
A: Yes  The one golden rule in Archery is that it has to be safe and as a club AOR encourages all ages and abilities to participate. As long as we can all shoot safely and sensibly we welcome you to the club.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: My son/daughter is looking for something to do after school, what time can I drop them off?
A: While juniors are the key to the continuing success of any club we are a sports club first and foremost not childcare providers - we don't accept unsupervised children under 14. While that may sound a bit mean there's nothing stopping Mum or Dad joining in the fun too. The GNAS Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults Policy ensures all GNAS affiliated clubs operate to a secure code of conduct designed to protect Children and Vulnerable Adults and the clubs themselves

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Dangers? there not barbed arrows surely?

A: There are dangers involved in archery, yet as with Air rifle clubs, the club is run to rigid safety rules and the risk is minimised. While archery is fun, there is no room for larking around when it comes to dangerous behavior you'll be ejected from any club, quicker than you can say "but I was only messing abou......"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q:What about equipment?

A:   'I've seen some second hand gear on eBay...'

'A friends got a old bow in his loft....'

'My bonus is burning a hole in my account, I'm going to Targetcraft......''

If any of these comments sound like you then STOP!  Archery equipment gets old and weak it also gets used to it's original owner, second hand equipment is always worth looking at but only when you know what you want, your first months in archery will see you shooting low strength bows to develop your technique, then you progress increasing the power in the bow as your shooting muscles develop. Experienced club members will be able to point you in the right direction, but if you turn up on the first day with £400 pounds of equipment don't think we are all going to be stunned. Beginners start at the low poundage bows and move up in a controlled way. Risers, Limbs and Arrows should be avoided second hand until you know what you need. Bow boxes, finger tabs, long rods, quivers, fletching jigs make fine small purchases, and ideal Christmas/birthday presents :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:Why Archery convince me?
A: Archery is an incredibly individual sport some people, practice all week and grumble if the wind, sun or talking behind the line, means they miss out on a ten and score an 9 instead, others love the way that its really only ever you against you, there is no goalie to let your team down, no dubious fouls behind the refs back. To others it's a low impact outdoor sport that doesn't make your 'fat bits' wobble and when you go to the pub afterwards you don't smell.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What about meeting people?
A: Well if you come and shoot on the main club days you'll enjoy the friendly club banter, and share in the wealth of knowledge available. AOR Juniors is our new section and our junior liaison is busy developing links with local schools and clubs. Adults and archery is a great fit, it's a low impact sport, it gets you out in the fresh air, like golf it's a good walk, (not ruined). Idea for families mums & daughters, father & sons, the perfect leveling ground. just don't blame me if your littlest one has the steadiest aim :)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:Why are there no prices on here?

A: If I put our prices on our site other local clubs could set their prices lower. We are a small club and the club fee is arranged at the AGM. The treasurer looks are the membership and determines if the current subs cover our outgoings,if they do the subs can come down. While the opposite is also true they haven't gone up in the last 8 years. What does increase slightly is the GNAS membership www.GNAS.ORG a requirement for anybody shooting Field archery in the UK. Includes a quarterly Magazine and £5 Million of insurance for every archer. Currently the years fee is around £39, so 11p per day? In a similar vein I could say that AOR membership starts from 9p/day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:What is AOR's long term vision?
A: We are known as a small friendly club which we try to maintain, what we want to develop is the competitive edge the club had in the past, we are actively encouraging members to venture out to club competitions locally. Members who win will appear on here, in the Hall of Fame. Our recent Lottery award has revitalised the club and we are busy promoting Archery in the local community. If you know of a fete, steam rally, open day that needs an extra activity drop me a line

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q:Have-a-Go's/Parties/Open Days/Corporate events and inter club competitions.
A: We are able to get on the road and come to your Steam Rally/Country fair to set up our stall. We can also help spice up a birthday party for someone bored of/too old for 'Wacky Warehouses'. We can provide certificates for the participants & medals. If your club fancies a challenge why not come and have a go with us and we may even come and try your sport. For more information email us.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Your FAQ/Site is missing something or a question hasn't been answered. What do I do?
A: Drop me a line, let me know what you feel should be added to the site/FAQ, any comments good/bad most welcome archersofraunds@ntlworld.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Whats new?
A: Website is undergoing an update also, latest section is the Press and Photos areas where you can read testimonials of our members and people that have finished a beginners course, and even see some low quality photos, (any buddng photographers looking for a sport please contact me).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Ok I have read everything from top to bottom where's your phone number?
A: Nearly had me there, it is surprising how much spam emails I get as it is from putting my email address on the site so if you want to talk just email me with your phone number and I'll give you a bell back. archersofraunds@ntlworld.com
